AUTUMN CAR RED

Autumn car red as a poinsettia:
collar up he gets in,
revs the engine.
Itís getting cold:
my stride quickens,
tap, tap, heels,
Amber light.

Plane tree leaves,
like scoffed at cornflakes,
ornament the road
at evening repast
of fish and chips.

A trail of smoke,
blue.
Clouds lie solidly athwart
the horizon contours of orange:
lumpen, flying vapour signals
above drab vegetation,
the streets pricked with light,
sky startled by toy aeroplanes.
