IN WHAT COINAGE

In what coinage could they pay,
birdsong, a dollar
for a momentary lightening of heart?

 Bulldozers rip the scrub.

Soft feathers cast from a falling nest,
fresh minted colour
for a momentary gladdening of eye.

 Concrete mixers dump their loads.

 Now neat suburban lawns display
an edging of bright flower beds.
A tidy birdbath holds the sky.

 No bank accepts bird currency.
