LION

Ears alert in the dry grass,
twin sisters wait
resting side by side:
Amali full of hope,
I, Kataza, impatient.

We hear the sound of your roaring:
the fire that follows the wind
over the ridges.
Your mane is a cloud that follows the fire
and your feet barely touch the earth.

Maalo amber-eyed,
will you protect us?

To please you we shall hunt antelope,
then together we shall lie down
where bare rocks pant
under the hot sun:
Maalo, Kataza, Amali.
