RAIN IN MARCH

After a dry February we hear
the melancholy sound of distant
thunder after rain:
blue, bruised clouds over the hills,
showers like scattered laughter.
We could stand with our mouths open
to catch every drop.
the downpour pats the earth
like a favourite cat,
drenches the half dry grass,
which stands up like frightened fur.
All the vegetation prickles with life.
